Implementing the DfE's Sustainability Strategy in Early Years Settings
Published in April 2022, the DfE’s Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy extends to all educational and children’s services in England, including early years settings. The strategy envisions the UK as a world leader in sustainability and climate education by 2030. A key milestone in this journey is that by 2025, every educational setting will have appointed a sustainability lead and established a climate action plan.
Children need to understand their interconnectedness within the wider ecological context and the impact of their actions. Early childhood is a crucial phase for laying the foundation of these values and attitudes. Teaching sustainability helps children to make sense of the world, develop a passion for the environment, and understand the importance of their actions on the planet.
