About the pre-school

St Michael’s Pre-school was established in the village more than 30 years ago. It is located in a stand alone, purpose built setting next to St Michael’s Woolmer Green Primary School. We moved into this setting in September 2012 following the expansion of the primary school. Within our setting we benefit from our own large, secure outdoor playground, garden and nature area.

We retain very close links with St Michael’s School and each year we provide a comprehensive and well established transition process from pre-school to the reception class for those children in their nursery year. This includes visits to reception class to familiarise children with the classroom and for them to meet the teachers, visits to the school playground and tours of the whole school site. For children moving on to other primary schools we invite reception teachers to visit us and request information from schools, such as a transition booklet, so that we can prepare children for the changes ahead.

New joiners and their families are invited to attend a ‘getting to know you’ session at the pre-school in the term before they are due to start with us to meet staff and start to get to know the setting. Immediately before starting we offer a home visit. A manager always attends the home visit to go through ‘the paperwork’ side of admissions and answer any questions that you might have.Your child’s ‘key person’ will also attend this visit. Each child at pre-school is assigned a key person.  This is the person who is your main point of contact within the setting and helps your child to become settled, happy and feel safe. She is responsible for your child’s care, development and learning and takes a careful note of your child’s progress, sharing this with you and giving you ideas as to how to help your child at home.

Your child’s learning and progress is tracked and presented to you in a comprehensive journal known as a ‘learning journal’. Learning is a continuous journey for us all. When your child joins St. Michael’s Pre-school they bring with them all the things they have already experienced. Their journey continues on a personal path, based on their own individual interests, achievements at home, exciting experiences at pre-school and many new and interesting challenges. Your child’s ‘learning journal’ provides you with a look at your child’s journey during their time with us. Its aim is to show you your child’s progress and the personalised support that they receive to meet their needs and extend their talents.

Parents receive a weekly email from the pre school leader which outlines planned activities linked to the ‘theme’ of the week which are in addition to the many child initiated opportunities that are always on offer. A newsletter from the pre-school leader is sent each half term. Please see the link below to view recent newsletters.

We seek to give parents as much choice as possible when choosing the sessions they would like their child to attend. Priority is always given to children in their nursery year but we seek to accommodate all preferences as much as we can within the framework of our opening hours. We offer flexible start and finish times throughout the day providing you with the options of pre-booking full day care between 9am and 3pm or shorter half day sessions We are often able to offer additional ‘ad-hoc’ sessions subject to availability.
